Seed & Trait Safety is a global CropScience Development expert function producing scientific data for the registration of novel regulated traits for Seeds products. Seed & Trait Safety carries out or oversees all data generation for the regulatory dossiers, including characterization studies of DNA and expressed protein in plants, field studies and grain production for food/feed risk assessment and generation of safety evaluations including human, animal & dietary and environmental safety studies. Seed & Trait Safety managers give technical support to the different market areas, expert advice and data to the Regulatory Affairs function and scientific expertise throughout the CropScience organization. They also provide scientific collaboration and guidance to government agencies, technology licensees and partner laboratories, in an overall goal of facilitating the global acceptance of novel food, feed and biotech products.
The basic purpose of the US Head of Seed & Trait Safety has day-to-day charge of the Seed & Trait Safety operations. He/she is responsible for the coordination of the Seed & Trait Safety teams in with oversight of all management and administrative tasks concerning the Seed & Trait Safety operations in the US. This includes coordinating and reporting on all budget (opex and capex), HR and site infrastructure questions. The US Head of Seed & Trait Safety is also responsible for compliance of the teams with all relevant quality management and stewardship requirements, and acts as GLP Testing Facility Manager. Special projects such as purchases of large equipment, long term site plans and integration projects are administered by the US Head of Seed & Trait Safety, in conjunction with the relevant team managers. The US Head of Seed & Trait Safety is expected to maintain a high level of contact with Head of Seed & Trait Safety and the global Seed & Trait Safety managers to ensure optimal effectiveness in operations. The US Head represents Seed & Trait Safety on the US Seeds leadership team, and the Development North America Community meetings.
Position
Responsibilities:
Ensure continuity and competitiveness of operations by implementing the global Seed & Trait Safety strategy for lab, greenhouse and field operations
Develop a flexible working relationship with the Gent site and third party cooperators. Think strategically and implement innovative solutions to upcoming scientific challenges
As a core member of the Seed & Trait Safety Leadership team ensure good relationships between all STSa functions. Work together to ensure consistent project plans, datasets and innovative solutions for current and future regulatory challenges
With the local managers and in cooperation with US controlling, develop and administer US budgets including capex, staffing and long term site plans. Ensure the provision of adequate infrastructure by predicting short and long term needs and managing interactions with site services and other US operations
Close interactions with other R&D functions to enable optimal use of the laboratory and greenhouse operations
Directly oversee the PPC and FSC group leaders and Tech. team, Tech. Coordination team and QA team managers and a team of support staff for administration and other support operations
With the local managers select and develop US staff up to the required level of competence, ensuring sufficient access and availability of future needs while keeping the US activities and resources within agreed cost and time limits
Where necessary, interact with other R&D departments to ensure resource availability
Act as GLP Testing Facility Manager. Ensure quality standards and traceability through quality management and laboratory information systems by managing a Quality team
Maintain a high level of compliance with relevant standards, in particular GLP for regulated trait studies, as requested by global management
With the local Seed & Trait Safety management team ensure that all operations are carried out according to QHSE, BioSafety and other Seeds rules and guidelines
Act as Seed & Trait Safety, R&D Analytical Labs, and Genetics representative on the Seeds US Leadership team, Attend Development North America Community meetings, where requested
Represent Seed & Trait Safety in local meetings, international conferences and professional associations contributing to the companys outstanding reputation in terms of excellence and leadership.
Position Requirements:
PhD or equivalent experience in Life Sciences with minimum 12 years sound knowledge of laboratory and field activities from personal experience
This is a Science based position, not research
Sound knowledge of laboratory research, including expertise in molecular biology and biochemistry
Knowledge of regulatory requirements in biotech
Strong experience with quality management systems (GLP)
Understands document and information management
Flexible and autonomous
Established Team leadership
Basic project management skills
Understands basic principles of management accounting (budget, forecast, actuals)
Confirmed networking and negotiation skills
Excellent communication skills
Able to manage diversity and multi-cultural teams.Estimated Salary: $20 to $28 per hour based on qualifications.
